2019’s iteration of the brewery’s popular summer seasonal has a lower gravity than past brewings, reducing Space Reaper to a more traditional India Pale Ale variation with a more drinkable 6% ABV. Otherwise, the recipe remains unchanged incorporating Mosaic hops with a blend of Canadian 2-row, CaraPils, C-60 and Wheat malt.
“Even at a lower ABV, Spawn of Space Reaper still hits all the notes that one would expect from the DIPA version with a complex aromatic array of mango, citrus, berry and tropical fruit and an agreeable herbal note to round it out,” says DC Brau’s Brewmaster and co-founder Jeff Hancock.
This IPA may not unlock all the secrets of this universe, but it will show you what lies beyond the palate, with a generous reaping of mosaic hops, sure to take you on the ride of your afterlife. Brewed to welcome the summer solstice, Space Reaper incorporates the Mosaic hop – one of the most sought-after aroma hops out there – with Canadian 2-row, CaraPils, C-60 and Wheat malts, and dextrose.
Coming to DC, MD, VA, and PA on the Summer Solstice on draft and in 16oz 4 packs.
Tasting Notes
There’s enough of a malt backbone to support the immense hop presence that this beer is known for. The brew is modeled off a traditional-hop forward “West Coast Style” IPA. It hits all the notes that one would expect from a huge DIPA with a complex aromatic array of mango, citrus, berry and tropical fruit with an agreeable herbal and light cedar note to round it out. First sip communicates a large, refreshing dose of hop bitterness followed up by a light, malty, sticky, resinous, cedar-like finish with hints of stone fruit and Guava.
